Precision Machining Apprenticeship

A person in an industrial setting sits at a table writing on papers, with several metal cylindrical components in front of them. Machinery and another worker are visible in the background.

Your mission

As a Precision Machining Apprentice, you’ll learn how to operate a wide range of manual and CNC machinery, working with materials that include metals, non-metallics, fissile materials, and explosives. You’ll develop the skills to manufacture high-precision components that meet exacting standards.

On successful completion, you’ll become a Craft Machinist; a skilled professional able to operate a variety of machine tools across different workshop environments, contributing directly to our mission.

WORK PATTERN

You’ll be based at one of our sites with one day a week off-site at college.

•    Attention to detail
•    Patience when approaching complex tasks
•    Good communication skills
•    The ability to follow instructions
•    A team player

Your journey

You’ll start your journey in our Skills Academy, where you’ll build essential hand-fitting and machining skills by creating real engineering tools through supervised tasks.

You’ll also attend college one day a week, gaining the knowledge behind the tools, materials, and processes you’ll use throughout your career.

In years 3-4, you’ll move into on-site placements, taking on more advanced machining tasks and gaining exposure to the full range of our manufacturing facilities. Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and behaviours, leading up to your End Point Assessment in the final six months.

Think you’ve got what it takes?

This role will appeal to you if you enjoy the challenge of manufacturing a component to meet the specifications laid down on an engineering drawing.

You will need good hand-eye coordination skills, good workshop and maths skills. The machinist role is very much a hands on role, it will require you to operate your own machines to manufacture parts which will fit together with other team members parts.
