Internal audit offers an unparalleled opportunity to work across the organisation dealing with multiple senior stakeholders and subject areas. The internal audit role involves delivering internal audits and third-line assurance to the AWE CEO and Audit Committee.
This apprenticeship will give you a strong foundation in governance, internal control, and risk management. You will assist in the delivery of audits in support of the annual internal audit plan and contribute to the reporting of insights that support the delivery of our mission.
THE QUALIFICATIONS YOU’LL NEED

You’ll need to be a British Citizen for security clearance.
You’ll be based at our Aldermaston site with one day a week off-site at college.
At AWE, we operate on a nine-day fortnight – meaning you get every other Friday off work in addition to 270 hours of annual leave.

You’ll join our internal audit team at AWE for six to twelve months.
A placement in internal audit should you with a good understanding of Governance, Internal Control and Risk Management. It also provides good coverage across the whole organisation and an understanding of its Strategic Risks applicable to many future roles.
You’ll follow a robust audit methodology developed by the Government Internal Audit Agency, aligned with Global Internal Audit Standards (GIAS). Using a dedicated audit management system, you’ll learn how to assess risk, evaluate processes and provide clear, constructive insights that drive real improvement.
You’re comfortable in an office setting and enjoy connecting with people whether that’s face-to-face, over email or on Teams. You like digging into new topics, spotting patterns and finding examples of best practice that others can learn from.
