Instrumentation Engineer
Describe your current role
I am part of the Instrumentation team at AWE. I provide support to our experts performing engineering trials to understand key aspects of the nuclear deterrent, working with a variety of sophisticated sensors and logging equipment. Our team has become the centre of support for a state-of-the-art miniature logging system, giving advice to other areas of the company. We calibrate most of our own sensors and help ensure working environments are safe and secure for others.
Why did you choose to join AWE?
I have always known that AWE completes ground-breaking work and has a reputation as a good employer. I heard from a friend that the company was worth working for, so when I saw an opportunity that matched my skills, I didn’t hesitate in applying!
What do you find interesting and enjoyable about your job?
The job varies between a large amount of equipment and some interesting locations. It has taken me all over the country and the US where I give presentations. I couldn’t imagine the technology that I work with on a daily basis and the different multidisciplinary teams with which I get to interact. There aren’t many days where I do the same thing twice, so it’s never dull or boring!
What or who inspired you to pursue a career in STEM?
I have always been interested in STEM and I was drawn to it by a love of flashing lights and buttons. I remember my Dad buying me a battery, wires, bulb and switch when I was very young and I suppose that’s how it started. Trips to the Science Museum and visits to see engineering at steam fairs was just the beginning of an interesting and varied career.
What advice would you give to those who wish to follow in your footsteps?
You don’t have to be an expert in everything and there’s no doubt you will be working with equipment that’s new. We have all had to pick up new skills and learn on the way in instrumentation. My advice would be: if you have some experience with electronics and some enthusiasm then you’re probably right for the team.
