Graduate Systems Engineer
How long have you worked at AWE?
I’m fairly new to the organisation – I’ve worked here for 5 weeks
What did you study at university?
I have competed a Ph.D. in Civil & Environmental Engineering (secondary: Mechanical Engineering) at the University of Strathclyde.
Why did you choose AWE?
I was fortunate enough to receive numerous opportunities across defence, Oil and Gas and the nuclear industries. I chose AWE due to the diverse portfolio of the work carried out here and the opportunities for global industry collaborations. AWE is currently working on exciting new projects that could potentially change the nuclear age as we know it. So, if you want to be part of something new, fresh and exciting, AWE is where you should be!
Tell us about your time at AWE?
I work within the warhead engineering department as a graduate system engineer. My job role encompasses all aspects of an engineering project; from initial conception, design, feasibility, and manufacturing all the way to decommissioning. Even though I have only been on site for 5 weeks, I have covered a tremendous amount via workshops, seminars, lectures and training courses. The people are very friendly and the experienced graduates and senior managers who are always available for guidance. People within my function group have been very accommodating and have worked with me to help me settle into my new job.
What are the benefits of AWE?
Working at AWE allows you to work in a very niche but desirable market. You have the option to work on cutting edge engineering and really drive innovation globally. At AWE you’re able to work on things you would never get to do in a normal industrial job, but not only that, you’re able to work across and within multiple disciplines to get exposure on how the company functions as a whole. The benefits package AWE provide in terms of a rewards programme is also nice, such as relocation costs, discounts on a number of high street brands, car share schemes etc.
What do you most enjoy about your current role?
I enjoy having the opportunity to meet industry experts every week on different projects. Working across a wide range of sectors makes your job a lot more interesting and fun. You get plenty of chances for personal development working on different projects which brings you that one step closer to becoming chartered quicker.
How do you see your career progressing?
I see myself becoming chartered with Institute of Engineering and Technology and Institute of Physics within 3 years and leading my own team within 5 years. Ideally, I would like to take on more of a management role and understand how AWE collaborates with its partners, contractors and industry/academic contacts.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about joining the AWE graduate programme?
Patience is a virtue, due to the nature of the job, you have to wait to get your relevant security clearance but know that if you’re lucky enough to be part of this graduate programme, you will have secured a position that holds no bounds. You can gain invaluable experience that is sought after in a number of industries across the world! Learn from your mistakes and make sure you speak to enough people to understand how AWE works and where you would want to fit in at the end of the graduate programme.
