Dame Sue Ion

Non-Executive Director

Dame Sue Ion is chair of the Engineering, Science and Technical Capability Assurance Committee.  She is currently Honorary President of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear and a member of the Office for Nuclear Regulation’s Independent Advisory Panel. Dame Sue has spent over three decades in the nuclear sector, notably as British Nuclear Fuels Limited’s (BNFL) Chief Technology Officer (1992 – 2006). She has since moved on to advisory roles examining broader energy matters, taking up the post of Chairman of the UK Government’s Nuclear Innovation Research Advisory Board (2014 –2016), and has sat on a number of advisory committees associated with the UK’s energy requirements.

Dame Sue holds honorary and visiting professorships at the University of Manchester and Imperial College London respectively, and currently serves as a member of Board of Governors of the University of Central Lancashire. Dame Sue is a Fellow of both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society, where she chairs and serves on several standing committees.

AWE joins RAICo

The Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Collaboration (RAICo) has announced the addition of AWE – a UK leader in nuclear technology and innovation – as its fifth member organisation. AWE joins the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), Sellafield Ltd, the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), and the University of Manchester in this integrated collaboration.

VE Day at Aldermaston

80 years ago, the European part of the Second World War came to an end. On the 8th of May 1945 - known as Victory in Europe Day or VE Day - celebrations erupted around the world to mark this.  Aldermaston had played its part in the liberation of Western Europe as it formed the launch point and training ground for American airborne operations for the 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed the "Screaming Eagles”, during D-Day a year earlier and the failed Operation Market Garden.
