Working at AWE

A career at AWE is a career like no other. By playing your part in keeping the nation safe and secure, you’ll have access to exceptional technologies, facilities and projects no ordinary company can provide – with the support of world-class professionals at every stage of your career

There has never been a more exciting time to join AWE. We’re going through a significant programme to design and produce Astraea, the replacement warhead for the UK’s continuous at sea deterrent, and managing hugely important infrastructure projects that will deliver cutting-edge facilities across a unique estate spanning over 1,000 acres.

If you’re looking for a role which will intrigue and excite you time and time again, then look no further. From science, to engineering, to manufacturing, to business services – it’s highly likely we’ve got a role to suit you.

We’re proud to have been recognised in a number of categories in the Best Companies to Work For. These awards are based solely on employee feedback, and we’re fortunate that our people enjoy life at AWE enough to share their experiences.

Agile and flexible working

We work with an agile working model, which means for some roles we offer the opportunity to work off site or at home. And, if it works for you and for the business, we’re also open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

We’re passionate about looking after our teams, ensuring they can perform their roles to the best of their ability. We want to ensure that every employee is recognised and rewarded for their contribution.

  • Exceptional work-related and professional development opportunities
  • Support to gain a relevant professional qualification
  • Funding for the annual membership of a relevant professional body
  • Competitive salary and regular pay reviews

We use an independent company to benchmark our salaries to ensure they’re competitive against industry standards, and we conduct regular performance-related pay reviews.

Applicant eligibility

We’re always keen to speak to candidates with unique skills and diverse experiences. The nature of our work, in a high-security environment, does mean you’ll need to be a British citizen to join AWE. You’ll also need to have resided in the UK for the past five years in order to apply for SC (and ten years for DV) clearance.

If you’ve lived outside of the UK for less than a year during the last five years, or less than two years during the last ten years, we may be able to consider your application – so please do apply if you wish to express your interest.

Security clearance

What we do is vital to national nuclear security. Keeping our nation, our environment, plus everyone and everything around us safe and secure is our top priority. So, as you would expect, that brings with it a high level of safety and security that you will see across our sites and in how everyone who works here operates.

Before joining AWE, successful candidates will need to be granted security clearance. This will include a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and, dependent on the nature of the role, either Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV). Clearance can take several months and each element is carried out by independent organisations – Sterling for BPSS, and UKSV for SC or DV.

Our working pattern

The working structure at AWE differs from other companies. We operate a 9-day working fortnight, which means our sites close every other Friday.

Our working pattern operates on a 2-weekly cycle, so:

  • During the first week, you’ll work Monday to Friday for a total of 41 hours (if full time).
  • During the second week, you’ll work Monday to Thursday for a total of 33 hours (if full time) – and not work on the Friday.

Annual leave

Because our working pattern differs from that of other companies, we calculate our annual leave in hours. You’ll benefit from a generous total of 270 hours’ leave a year, which includes an allowance for Bank Holidays.

Life insurance

We provide a life insurance benefit for all employees aged up to and including 74. This means that, in the event of your death, a lump sum death-in-service benefit of 4x your annual salary is payable.

Personal pension

When you join us, you’ll enrol in the AWE Group Personal Pension plan.

Upon being enrolled in the pension plan, you’ll pay a percentage of your salary into your pension each month. It’s flexible, so you can increase or decrease the amount you pay into the plan at any time. AWE will also make a contribution to your pension on your behalf.
