Environment, Safety Health & Quality
Environment, Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q) underpins everything we do at AWE: whether in support of complex nuclear processes, quality checking of work being undertaken or supporting our work environment, this areas plays a vital role.
As a graduate in ESH&Q you’ll spend the first three months immersing yourself within the Environment, Safety, Health (ESH) and Quality (Q) team to understand what we do in those areas, and across AWE as a whole. You will then go on to specialise in one of the following three areas for the remainder of the programme.
Environment
You will work as part of a team to implement AWE’s Environmental Management System, certified to ISO 14001 (internationally recognised standard for Environmental Management Systems).
- Develop understanding of AWE’s Environmental Management System and gain practical implementation in operational areas
- Gain experience of Environmental Risk Assessment and risk-based inspections in line with relevant legislation, industry standards and AWE’s policies, procedures and guidance
- Gain knowledge of radioactive waste management and application of Best Available Technique
- Develop understanding of AWE’s approach to sustainability including plans for reducing carbon, enhancing biodiversity and embedding the principles of the circular economy
- Gain experience in sustainability assessment tools including Sustainability Appraisals and Defense-Related Environmental Assessment Methodology
- Continuously develop understanding of environmental legislation and obligations
Previous environment graduates have typically held degrees in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Geography, or Geology; however, other STEM disciplines would be considered.
Nuclear Safety Case Assessor
As a nuclear safety case assessor, you’ll be working as part of a team to assess the risk and consequences of design, engineering, and operational failures. This will include modelling accident scenarios and identifying controls to prevent them.
- Develop skills in major hazard assessment and support the analysis and assessment of nuclear, radiological, chemical, explosives and other major hazards associated with actual, planned and/or decommissioned facilities, plant, equipment, or product
- Gain experience developing safety assessments and justifications (e.g., Safety Cases) in line with relevant legislation, industry standards and AWE’s policies, procedures and guidance
- Continuously develop understanding of current health and safety legislation, the ONR licensing regime and the fundamental application of the ALARP principle
- You’ll also contribute to the production and review of safety assessments, justifications
Quality
As a graduate Quality Engineer, you will work towards becoming a key member of the Quality team of the future, bringing new ideas and innovation, whilst maintaining the robust standards, policies, processes and procedures and compliance to our Licence Conditions – we have 36 we need to comply to. Working towards membership of the CQI on a planned career path, you’ll ensure that AWE adheres to the ISO 9001 certified Quality Management System, policies and procedures.
- Develop an understanding of customer satisfaction and the tools and processes utilised in measuring business performance and delivery
- Gain a good understanding of configuration and change management techniques
- Develop an understanding of improvement techniques, such as Lean, Six Sigma, RLI
- Be able to develop, implement and maintain management systems, processes, procedures and other supporting documentation
- Gain experience in auditing from definition/scheduling through to implementation, reporting and close out
Where this programme could take your career
You could work within operations as a safety case assessor, providing assessment of major hazards to ensure our high hazard facilities and operations are demonstrated to be As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) and meet regulatory commitments.
As part of Infrastructure Project Delivery, you would provide assessment and guidance on new partner organisations for high hazard new build facilities and/or projects, ensuring the design of new facilities are demonstrated to be ALARP.
Alternatively, you could become a key member of the quality team of the future, bringing new ideas and innovation helping to shape our capabilities, supporting the delivery of high-quality products, assets and processes.
You’ll be supported towards professional registration of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), once you’ve gained the knowledge and experience you need, you can apply for full registration.
