Chief Nuclear Inspector’s Annual Report 2025/26

AWE welcomes the Chief Nuclear Inspector’s Annual Report 2025/26 and is pleased to note that the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has recognised the sustained and effective safety performance across both the Aldermaston and Burghfield sites, which remain under routine regulatory attention.

The report highlights the strength of AWE’s nuclear safety arrangements and acknowledges the progress made in addressing regulatory matters while maintaining safe and reliable operations in support of our critical role in providing nuclear services to meet the needs of defence.

Ian Rogers, AWE’s Chief Nuclear Officer and Executive Director of Corporate Assurance, Safety, Health, Environment, Sustainability, Quality & Security, said: “The report reflects our continued commitment to maintaining the highest standards of nuclear safety while delivering our vital mission for defence. Throughout the reporting period, we demonstrated sustained safety performance and worked constructively and transparently with the ONR to address regulatory issues and drive continuous improvement.

“We are particularly encouraged by the ONR’s recognition that adequate processes are in place to meet the challenges of our ambitious infrastructure delivery programme, which is critical to ensuring the long-term resilience of our operations and capability. As we continue to modernise our estate, while maintaining ongoing operations, safety will remain our foremost priority.”
