Researching the future
For decades, AWE has partnered with universities to access world-leading expertise and drive innovation. Today, we work with more than 35 institutions through a range of collaborations, from sponsored research projects to strategic partnerships.
Our strongest academic relationships are recognised as Strategic Alliances, providing a framework for long-term collaboration and shared innovation. These partnerships span a range of disciplines critical to AWE’s mission and include universities such as Bristol, Cranfield, Heriot-Watt, Imperial College London, Manchester, Strathclyde and Surrey.
We also support Centres of Excellence that bring together universities, national laboratories, industry partners and the High Value Manufacturing Catapult to accelerate research, innovation and technology readiness. Alongside this, our prestigious William Penney Fellowships strengthen collaboration with leading academics, helping to enhance UK capability in key technical fields.
AWE continually seeks new opportunities to engage with academia, including undergraduate, master’s and doctoral projects. These collaborations enable us to benefit from fresh perspectives whilst giving students the opportunity to apply their skills to real-world engineering challenges.
Developing our people through academic partnerships
Academic engagement also plays an important role in developing AWE’s own technical experts. Our engineers regularly contribute to university teaching through visiting academic appointments, guest lectures and industrial projects, developing their own communication skills and helping students understand how their studies translate into practical applications.
At the same time, AWE supports employees to undertake advanced qualifications where specialist skills are needed, ensuring we continue to develop the expertise required to meet future challenges.
