AWE Strengthens Commitment to Women in Defence

AWE has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace by supporting the Women in Defence Charter, a sector-wide initiative designed to improve gender balance across the UK defence enterprise.

The Charter brings together organisations from across both the public and private sectors, united by a shared ambition to increase the representation, retention and progression of women throughout the defence industry. By contributing data and participating in industry-wide benchmarking and collaboration, signatories demonstrate their commitment to creating workplaces where everyone can thrive.

At AWE, supporting women is an important part of our wider inclusion and belonging strategy. We recognise that attracting, developing and retaining diverse talent is essential to delivering our critical mission and ensuring we continue to benefit from a broad range of perspectives, experiences and ideas. Through our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, we are working to build an environment where everyone feels valued, respected and empowered to achieve their potential.

As part of these efforts, AWE has pledged support for a number of initiatives that promote greater representation across industry, including the Women in Defence Charter, WISE, and internal employee networks focused on gender balance and professional development. The organisation has set ambitious goals to increase female representation across employee groups and strengthen inclusion at every level of the business.

Women continue to make significant contributions across AWE, from engineering and manufacturing to science, technology and leadership roles. Their expertise plays a vital role in delivering the UK’s nuclear deterrent and supporting national security. Through outreach programmes, mentoring opportunities, professional networks and career development initiatives, AWE is helping to inspire and support current and future generations of women in STEM and defence careers.

The organisation is also proud to celebrate the achievements of women across its workforce. From engineers developing innovative manufacturing capabilities to scientists leading specialist teams in support of national security, women at AWE are shaping the future of defence science and engineering while serving as role models for others considering careers in the sector.

By supporting the Women in Defence Charter, AWE joins organisations across the defence community in working towards lasting change. Together, these collective efforts will help create a more balanced, inclusive and innovative defence sector, ensuring talented individuals have the opportunity to build rewarding careers and contribute to the UK’s security regardless of gender.
