AWE to become guardians of historic Aldermaston Park
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has purchased Aldermaston Park, a 139-acre site on the northern boundary of AWE’s Aldermaston site. The site will be occupied by AWE.
Aldermaston Park had a role in the UK’s defence and scientific story long before AWE was established, from supporting military aviation during the Second World War to pioneering research that helped shape the foundations of AWE today.
This investment is a further demonstration of the Government’s commitment to the nuclear deterrent.
Mark Hedges, Executive Director, Estate & Liabilities said: “Aldermaston Park presents a great opportunity for us to take ownership of land bordering our existing site.
“The purchase gives us greater control of our boundary while also providing us with options for our site in the long-term as we continue to develop and invest in our infrastructure.”
Acquiring the estate means AWE will be guardians of seven Grade II-listed buildings, including the Grade II* listed Aldermaston Manor. It intends to carry out essential repairs to help preserve the Park’s historic buildings for future generations.

Mark added: “We know the Park is important to many people living nearby, many of whom also work for us, therefore we are delighted and privileged to now take on its future care.
“We are establishing how we will use the estate, and where our fencing will be, but we are open to discussions on how we could potentially provide local community access to a dedicated section of the Park in the future. I’m pleased to say churchgoers will still be permitted to use the car park next to St Mary’s.”
The Park has a rich environmental footprint that AWE will take care to respect. The defence organisation is looking at how the park will be used in the long-term; however, these plans are at an early stage. More information will be shared with the local community as it becomes available, such as proposals for future security fences. It is expected some security fencing will be visible along Red Lane, but the majority is likely to be located inside the park.
