75 Years of dedication: Defence Secretary visits AWE

As we mark our 75th anniversary, AWE welcomed The Rt Hon. John Healey MP, Secretary of State for Defence, to AWE Aldermaston.

Meeting with Nick Elliott, AWE’s Chief Executive Officer, the Secretary of State saw first-hand how the Government’s investment into the UK sovereign warhead programme, highlighted in the recently published Strategic Defence Review, is supporting enduring national capability in nuclear science and technology, AWE’s crucial contribution to the Continuous-at-sea-Deterrent and growth across the economy.

During his visit, the Secretary of State had the opportunity to meet many of our amazing people, including apprentices, graduates and those whose exceptional work has been recognised through national awards, hearing how their work helps deliver our mission to keep the nation safe.

“The nuclear weapons technology delivered at AWE keeps us all safe every minute of the day”, John Healey said in a MOD press release. “The skilled men and women working here play a fundamental role in deterring global conflict and that cannot be underestimated. However, our nuclear deterrent doesn’t just protect us, it also powers prosperity. The Defence Nuclear Enterprise delivers on the Plan for Change by backing thousands of jobs across the country.”

While at Aldermaston the Secretary of State also met with Olivia Bailey, MP for Reading West and Mid Berkshire, and spoke to national press about the cutting-edge science and technology at the heart of AWE, the creation of a number of skilled jobs across the organisation in recent months and the economic growth impact on the local area.
