AWE computational scientist takes up new role at the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications

This year, AWE computational scientist Jennifer has been appointed Vice President of Industry and Professional Affairs at the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA).

The IMA is a professional and learned society to support the advancement of mathematical knowledge and its applications and to promote and enhance mathematical culture in the UK and overseas, for the public good. With a membership of well over 5,000 comprising of mathematicians, as well as those with an interest in mathematics, it is the only institute in the country that represents mathematics in all sectors, from industry and government, to academia and education.

The society provides professional recognition and registration routes specifically for those working in mathematics and is also a member of the Alliance for Data Science Professionals, supporting the development of new professional standards in data science.

One focus for Jennifer will be to support mathematicians in industry. She says “This appointment is an exciting opportunity to strengthen links between industry, academia, institutes and Government. Mathematics plays a crucial role in the economy and having representation at this level ensures we can access and contribute to key conversations, such as around energy and the talent pipeline.”

“AWE has always been very supportive in the professional development of their employees, whether that is through training or membership of professional institutes like the IMA. It is not only important for the business to ensure we adhere to high standards of mathematics, but also to represent our industry, network with others, and feed into best practices across the UK’s mathematics community.”

Our experts use mathematics to answer pressing challenges across AWE and to develop safer and more efficient ways of working for the business. Mathematics also underpins work that supports the UK’s commitment to the comprehensive-test-ban treaty.

Congratulations to Jennifer on her new role!
