AWE Welcomes the Chief Nuclear Inspector’s Report 2021/2022

AWE welcomes the Chief Nuclear Inspector’s Report  published today (12 October) by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR).

The report highlights the AWE Burghfield site’s return to routine regulatory attention, driven by ‘demonstrable and sustained progress in safety performance, and with the leadership team showing a proactive approach to safety management and culture.’

The ONR reports that areas of challenge remain for the Aldermaston site in relation to ageing facilities management and facility upgrades saying, that while improvements have been made, they expect delivery of outcomes on the company’s Structure Improvement Programme to be realised throughout 2022/23.

Andy Scargill, AWE’s Executive Director Liabilities, said: “The report acknowledges AWE’s sustained and significant safety improvements, demonstrating our proactive approach to safety management and culture.”

He added: “While progress has been made at the Aldermaston site, we will continue to work collaboratively and tirelessly to achieve similar standards.”
