British Science Week 2021

AWE is marking British Science Week with new activities that complement our ongoing STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) outreach work with local schools and students. These include our STEM ambassadors and apprentices developing presentations on varied topics, as a visual and engaging way for young learners to discover more about science.

This series of presentations support STEM learning for teaching staff of local students. The presentations cover topical content, such as green energy and the science behind detergents and were developed with our partner schools.

One of our new activities is the STEM Star awards through our partner college, Queen Mary’s College in Basingstoke. This sixth-form award scheme enables students to showcase their STEM skills. The prize-winning STEM stars will be selected from those who have completed a research/development project and can be on anything – from biofuels, to robotics and beyond.

A further new activity is Spotlight on STEM. In partnership with the education charity Education Business Partnership, West Berkshire a team of our graduates have developed presentations, videos and worksheets to promote and support STEM subjects in local schools.

Each year, British Science Week creates a nationwide celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for people of all ages with thousands of events and activities taking place across the length and breadth of the country.

Essential to our school outreach work are our STEM ambassadors who work in partnership with local educational charities so we can engage with lots of students from primary age right through to sixth form. You can meet Damaris, one of our STEM ambassadors, here to discover more about our outreach work with local pupils.
