Statement from AWE Management Limited

AWE Management Limited has received notification from the Ministry of Defence of the termination of its Management and Operations contract from 30 June 2021.

AWE Management Limited has supported the AWE mission, central to the UK’s defence, for two decades and is wholly committed to the smooth transition of its management and operation back to the Ministry of Defence.

We are proud of our achievements and the significant progress we have made developing this unique, scientific and engineering national asset and executing a number of ‘first of a kind’ projects in a complex and highly regulated environment.

AWE Management Limited will continue to manage and operate the enterprise until 30 June 2021 and will work closely with the Ministry of Defence over that period to ensure a smooth transition and the seamless continuity of the vital work carried out by the enterprise.

 

Statement from AWE plc

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has announced that AWE plc will transfer to government ownership, becoming an Arms-Length Body wholly owned by the MOD.

AWE plc will work closely with our MOD colleagues and AWE Management Limited to ensure a smooth transition. Our primary focus will be on the continued safe and secure operation of our sites, as we maintain progress on our critical programme.

AWE joins the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), Sellafield Ltd, the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), and the University of Manchester in this integrated collaboration.

VE Day at Aldermaston

80 years ago, the European part of the Second World War came to an end. On the 8th of May 1945 - known as Victory in Europe Day or VE Day - celebrations erupted around the world to mark this.  Aldermaston had played its part in the liberation of Western Europe as it formed the launch point and training ground for American airborne operations for the 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed the "Screaming Eagles”, during D-Day a year earlier and the failed Operation Market Garden.
