AWE’s Graham Hughes elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering

AWE’s Head of Product Assurance, Graham Hughes, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering

He is one of 54 leading engineers, from the UK and around the world, who have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of their outstanding and continuing contributions to the profession. Graham is renowned nationally and internationally for his support to the UK’s nuclear deterrent and non-proliferation activities. For more than 25 years, he has worked on the programme, gaining a unique understanding of many of the political, and technical issues involved. Areas of particular expertise relate to safety and security, which have unique requirements and constraints.

He has worked closely with UK and international partners to progress understanding and technology in these subjects. He has played significant roles in a number of well-known multilateral proliferation cases, which have resulted in the demonstration that the nuclear programmes of a number of countries are for peaceful purposes only.

Professor Dame Ann Dowling OM DBE FREng FRS, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, says: “Our Fellows are at the heart of all Academy activities and I am delighted to welcome these highly successful, creative and inspiring engineering leaders to the Fellowship. There has never been a more important time for the Academy to advance and promote excellence in engineering so that the engineering profession can continue to contribute to societal wellbeing and economic growth.”

All the new Fellows were formally admitted to the Academy at its AGM in London on Monday 30 September. They will add their expertise to the Fellowship of nearly 1,600 eminent engineers from both industry and academia.
