ONR Review of the Development of the AWE Structured Improvement Programme

AWE is working closely with the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) on a Structured Improvement Programme (SIP) as part of its overall longer-term business aims. These activities also incorporate improvements in operational performance including safety and compliance.

The SIP consists of four related projects focusing on safe operations, process, change and stakeholder interactions.

Paul Rees, AWE’s Head of Safety, said: “This programme of work sets us challenging, but achievable targets which we are working towards. Everybody at AWE remains committed to attaining the highest standards in safety performance.”

The ONR has published their position on the development of the AWE SIP, as of August 2018.

The ONR says in their report: “On the basis of our engagement to date, ONR considers that the SIP is adequately developed, is now in the implementation stage and that the risks associated with non-delivery are being managed appropriately by AWE.

“However, ONR recognises that successful forward delivery of the SIP is predicated on a sustainment of the level of commitment and proactive governance that is currently being demonstrated by the AWE leadership.”
