AWE’s Route to Success lives up to its name

A two-week, thousand-mile cycle marathon raised more than £3,000 for charity and visited five universities to showcase careers opportunities at AWE.

The Route to Success team was made up of graduate and senior scientists and engineers, including chief executive Iain Coucher. They team cycled enough miles to go to China and back and each individual rider climbed the equivalent of 1.5 times the height of Mount Everest!

Route to Success also raised awareness of the great work done by AWE partner charity, Living Paintings. Over the course of their training programme and during the actual event, team members raised over £3,000 and donated 100 hours of service to the charity.

They visited five universities, speaking to more than 250 students about science, engineering and technology careers at AWE. A full-size working road bike, designed and produced on a 3-D printer by AWE graduates, proved a great topic of conversation amongst the students they spoke to. One of the event organising team, Nicole, said: “One key element of the project that supported the university effort was the additive manufactured bike. In a short space of time, we designed, manufactured and assembled the bike. It received great attention and provides a platform we an continue to use to support outreach and development programmes.”
