AWE in BBC Four documentary

AWE will feature in an upcoming BBC Four science documentary about the making of Britain’s first nuclear weapon, entitled ‘Britain’s Nuclear Bomb: The Inside Story’.

The documentary, exclusively filmed at AWE in the summer of 2015, covers the scientific-endeavours triumphed by staff at AWE Aldermaston in the 1950’s.

In 1957, Britain exploded its first thermonuclear bomb – code-named Operation Grapple.

It was the culmination of an extraordinary scientific project, which against almost insuperable odds turned Britain into a nuclear superpower.

Speaking for the first time, three former AWE employees, theoretical physicist, Professor Bryan Taylor, Former Chief Scientist, the late, Ken Johnston and photographer Ted Baker, tell the story of AWE Aldermaston in that era.

The programme airs tonight, Wednesday (May 3), at 9pm, on BBC Four.
